All plastic material orders are cut to customers chosen sizes and requirements once ordered. How do I clean acrylic?

Blow or lightly brush away any dust and loose dirt from the surface of the acrylic
Using a mild solution of lukewarm water and washing up liquid clean the surface of more resistant dirt and grime.
Rinse with clean water.
Blot dry with a microfibre cloth to prevent water spotting.

How should I clean acrylic sheet?

Acrylic should not be cleaned using chemical cleaners because they can cause damage to the acrylic. We recommend cleaning acrylic sheet with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. There are various acrylic cleaners and polishers available which we can provide that keep acrylic looking like brand new.

Is acrylic suitable for laser cutting and engraving?

Accepted Answer

Acrylic is an extremely versatile material which provides great results when being laser cut or laser engraved. Both extruded and cast acrylic can be laser cut, however extruded acrylic can be left with a slight burr on the edge of the material after laser cutting whereas cast acrylic is left with an extremely smooth edge. Depending on the power of the laser tube it is possible to cut acrylic up to a thickness of 25mm whilst maintaining a square edge. Clear cast acrylic is normally favoured when producing awards and plaques because once engraved it turns a frosty white colour which creates a stunning finish. Certain colours do not react very well when laser cut because the pigment or dye in the acrylic reacts poorly to heat, however the edge discolouration can normally be reduced by modifying settings on the laser such as the cutting speed, the volume of air flow and the amount of power being used.

Is it possible to cut acrylic sheet myself?

Acrylic sheet can be cut using a circular saw, a jigsaw or any type of saw with a fine tooth blade. We recommend laying the acrylic flat on a firm surface, such as a workbench, and clamping it down before cutting. If you are using clamps to hold the material down, we suggest placing wood between the clamps and acrylic sheet to prevent any damage to the surface of the acrylic. What are polished edges?

When we cut an acrylic sheet to size, the saw blade/router toolbit produces a matte finish on the edges of the panel. We use a technique called diamond polishing to polish the edges to a bright, smooth and glossy finish.
Our diamond edge-polishing machine polishes the edge of acrylic by running a rotating, diamond tipped wheel along the edge of the material.

What are the uses of Perspex

Perspex is used in a vast variety of different ways - it's chemical properties, wide range of colours and finishes, availability and cost, make it the material of choice in applications and industries ranging from home repairs and general DIY through to construction, furniture design, retail displays, signage, lighting and interior design. In the home it can be used to replace broken greenhouse glass panels, as bathroom/kitchen splashbacks or even to replace broken picture frame glass. In commercial environments acrylic mirrors, acrylic block for retail displays and LED diffusers for lighting are commonly used. We stock and supply all of the Perspex product ranges, all of which we can provide cut to size and ready for use.

What happens to my delivery if I'm not at home?

What is the difference between cast acrylic and extruded acrylic?

Accepted Answer

Acrylic is manufactured in two versions - cast and extruded. Cast acrylic is made by pouring the hot liquid acrylic ingredients between two sheets of glass which are separated by rubber gaskets - the thickness of the gasket determines the thickness of the acrylic sheet being made. The sealed glass plates are placed into an oven and allowed to heat during which the chemical processes and changes take place. Finally, the sheets are allowed to cool. Cast acrylic is commonly used for glazing, signage and retail displays. Extruded acrylic is made by pouring hot liquid acrylic ingredients into a form or die before the acrylic is forced through rollers which leaves the material with an even thickness and finish. Cast acrylic is generally regarded as a better quality material and offers a number of advantages over the extruded variant such as being more resistant to chemicals and solvents, less prone to scratching, easier to machine and fabricate and available in a far wider range of colours and surface finishes i.e. gloss/matte. Extruded acrylic is commonly used for lighting applications, interior decoration and screening.

What should I use to fit an acrylic splashback?

Splashbacks can be fitted using non solvent based adhesive, double sided tape or screws. Adhesive and tape are more commonly used but if the chosen material is transparent then screws are the only option as the adhesive may be visible through the material. Suitable tapes and adhesives can be found in our accessories page. If using screws you can select drill holes when placing you order.

Is it possible to polish out scratches in Perspex®?

Sanding, flame polishing and diamond polishing are all viable solutions for removing scratches on Perspex®. One point to be aware of is that diamond polishing removes material i.e. it cuts away a very small amount of material to achieve the polished edge, therefore if you want to remove scratches without affecting the dimensions of the part you should avoid diamond polishing. Another solution for removing light scratches and restoring shine is to use Osborn Unipol Plastic Polish.

What machines do you use for polishing Perspex®

Within our plant we have 2 Bermaq Polishing machines, an AMI with a maximum polishing length of 2.5m plus the added facility to tilt the cutting head to achieve beveled edges and a Bermaq AM2 with a maximum polishing length of 1.25m. We also have three AquaFlame flame polishers. Finally we have a fully restored W Canning buffing/polishing wheel.

Is it possible to flame polish PETg or Polycarbonate?

Accepted Answer

Both PETg and Polycarbonate are thermoplastics that share some similarities with Perspex®, certainly there are many applications where any of the three materials could be used. Polycarbonate doesn’t react well to flame polishing because the surface being heated tends to bubble and distort whereas PETg reacts remarkably well to the heat from flame polishing and it is possible to achieve similar results to that of Perspex®. Diamond polishing is also possible with both PETg and Polycarbonate provided the right type of cutters are used.

Can I buy Perspex(R) acrylic sheets near me?

Depending on where you live within the UK, it may be possible to buy acrylic sheets locally, however you should be aware that most of the large DIY retailers will only stock clear acrylic, in a small selection of sizes and thicknesses, which means you'll need the tools to cut it to size at home. The advantage of buying from Simply Plastics is that you can purchase the exact size you require, there will be no wastage and you don't need any tools to cut to size - furthermore, to make it easier we'll deliver it directly to your home or workplace just a few days later. We are based in Colchester, just 30 minutes from London but we deliver right across the UK.

Cast acrylic is generally regarded as a better quality material and offers a number of advantages over the extruded variant such as having a higher optical clarity and superior surface finish, being more resistant to chemicals and solvents, less prone to scratching, easier to machine and fabricate and available in a far wider range of colours and surface finishes i.e. gloss/matte. The manufacturing process for cast acrylic is longer and more complex than that of extruded acrylic which in-turn generally makes extruded acrylic slightly cheaper.

What are the differences between DiBond®, Alupanel® and ACM?

Both Dibond® and Alupanel® are just brand names of Aluminium Composite Material, which is also commonly referred to as ACM or Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP).
For many years the brand name Dibond® was synonymous with the material with many not realising that Dibond® was merely a brand name for ACM / ACP. Although Dibond is one of the better known brand names of ACM, today Multipanel UK is the largest stockist of ACM globally.

Is it possible to laser cut Aluminium Composite Panel?

Accepted Answer

The answer to this question is not clear cut. Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) is a composite of two main materials, the outer skin which on most ACP is 0.3mm Aluminium and the inner core with is made from Low Density Polyethelyne (LDPE). This means that we have to consider how both of these materials react to laser cutting.
Aluminium can be laser cut however a high powered laser is required - typically 500+ watts is required to produce a clean cut on 3mm aluminium. On the other hand, Polyethelyne can be laser cut at a relatively low power, in-fact if Polyethelyne is laser cut with a high powered beam it does tend to warp and/or melt.
Therefore the power and temperature required to laser cut through the two primary materials in ACM are very different and this unfortunately makes laser cutting ACM virtually impossible. The power and heat required to laser cut aluminium will be so high that it will likely warp, melt or blow holes through the polyethelyne. Contrastly, if the laser is set to the low power levels required to laser cut polyethelyne it won't be anywhere near powerful enough to even mark the aluminium, let alone cut through it.

How can Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) be cleaned?

Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) can be cleaned with nothing more than warm soapy water and a non-abrasive cloth. It is important that alkaline, acidic and abrasive cleaning products are avoided as this can have an adverse effect on the coating.

What is Brushed Alupanel® / Dibond®?

Brushed Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP), also often referred to as a 'Butler Finish', has a directional grain appearance 'brushed' into the aluminium. Traditionally the term 'Butler finish' refers to the result of regular cleaning and polishing of fine silverware. In thicker grade aluminiums and other metals, the brushed effect is created by mechanically abrading or brushing the substrate, however to acheive that same effect on Aluminium Composite the thin layers of aluminium are mechanically embossed. 
Brushed Alupanel is a two sided material available in three variants, Copper/Black, Bronze/Gold and Aluminium/Silver.

We offer the option of ordering acrylic letters supplied with a self-adhesive backing, however it is also possible to use almost any non-solvent based adhesive or tape to mount your Perspex letters. When cleaning acrylic letters be careful not to use harsh chemicals that can negatively affect the appearance and longevity of the material. To keep your acrylic lettering looking fresh and in great condition, simply clean with a soft microfibre cloth using a mild mix of lukewarm water and washing detergent. Whats the difference between Plexiglass and Plexiglas®?

These two terms are pronounced the same and spelt almost identically, however, Plexiglass is the genericized trademark or proprietary emponym that has become synonymous with acrylic sheeting in most of Europe and North America whereas Plexiglas® is the brand name for acrylic sheets manufactured by Röhm GmbH in Germany. Whilst Plexiglass has become the generic trademark for acrylic sheets in Europe and North America, the brand name Perspex® is synonymous with acrylic sheeting in the UK.

Whats the difference between Plexiglas® and Perspex®?

Both Plexiglas® (most commonly spelt Plexiglass) and Perspex® are brand names of Acrylic sheet. Röhm GmbH, based in Germany, are the manufacturers of Plexiglas® whereas Perspex® is manufactured in the UK by Perspex International Limited. Both manufacturers supply a wide range of colours and thicknesses. Whilst the brand names Plexiglas® and Perspex® are different, ultimately the acrylic sheet that they manufacture is the same albeit each manufacturer might tweek the formulation to increase or enhance UV-resistance, light transmission or colour.

In our experience, whilst some projects/applications will require specific characteristics of either Cast or Extruded Acrylic, in most cases the choice can be made based on either colour, thickness or cost, as below:

Clear or Colour: Extruded acrylic is generally only manufactured in clear, black and white and therefore if there is a requirement for any other colour, Cast Acrylic is the only choice.
Thickness: Cast acrylic is commonly manufactured in thicknesses up to 100mm whereas extruded is generally available in a maximum thickness of 20mm (Simply Plastics stock up to 50mm in Cast and 10mm in Extruded).
Cost: Extruded is marginally cheaper and therefore any requirement for a large quantity of sheets/panels, where the benefits of cast acrylic are not important, is likely to be more cost effective produced in Extruded acrylic.

Yes, the walls of twinwall and multiwall polycarbonate sheets are very thin and therefore can easily be cut with a fine toothed saw. If you do choose to cut twinwall/multiwall roofing sheets yourself you should consider sealing the openings using breather tape or solid roofing tape.
